The Yule Lads Annual Bath

Every year the Yule Lads go in their annual bath in the Myvatn Naturebath where guests can join them and have some fun. Some of the Yule Lads are not happy with this tradition, because they don´t like the water. But other Yule Lads just love to take a bath and be clean. The bath takes place two weeks before Christmas.  This year it will be on Saturday the 12th of December, at 17:00 pm.

Before Christmas the Icelandic Yule Lads welcome guests to visit them in Hallarflöt in Dimmuborgir everyday between 1 pm and 3 pm. Guests older than 18 years need to pay ISK 1.000 to the Gryla fund. The Yule Lads are always collecting money for their mother so she can buy herself new things, such as a new love story, a dress for Christmas or even new pajamas for Leppaludi, because as the story goes, the Christmas cat ate his pajamas.

The Yule Lads are the 13 sons of Gryla and Leppaludi, vicious trolls that live in Ludentarborgir in the Myvatn area. Gryla is ancient - her name is even mentioned in Snorri Sturluson´s thirteenth century Edda.Gryla and Leppaludi brought up their thirteen sons, the Yule Lads by Lake Myvatn. As the lads grew up they wanted a place of their own and Dimmuborgir was the perfect place for them to settle down. An old legend in Iceland is, that 13 days prior to Christmas the Yule Lads start coming down from the mountain, one each night. Children in Iceland place their best shoe on their windowsill before going to bed and each night a little gift is left in it from the Yule Lad that came down from the mountain that night. If the child has been misbehaving, there might be a raw potato left instead.

Towns & Villages

Society and the economy have many faces. Whereas agriculture is the mainstay of rural areas, the towns depend upon fishing, industry, trade and a range of services, with each village having its own characteristics though they all prove hospitable hosts.
The availability of food and accommodation and the possibilities at every location for recreation and entertainment make hopping between the villages informative as well as fun.
In every case, the residents are lively and ready to celebrate.
