Vaka Folk festival

The Vaka Folk Arts Festival presents a singular opportunity to enjoy Iceland’s very best folk musicians and dancers along with performers from northern Europe – who are all deeply rooted in the traditions of their place.

Artists

Artists at Vaka 2018 are Spilmenn Ríkínís (Iceland), Matti Kallio Trio(Finland), Gefjun, Iðunn and Ríma societies of traditional rimur-singers (Iceland), Eeva-Kaisa Kohonen (Finland), Claire White(Shetlands), Accordion Society of Eyarfjörður (Iceland), Marilyn Tucker & Paul Wilson (England), Vefarinn dance society (Iceland), Anna Fält (Finland), Funi (Iceland), Sporið dance group (Iceland), Matt Quinn (England), Strilaringen dance group (Norway).

Vefarinn

Our festival artists attend all four days of the festival, so there are numerous opportunities to meet, chat and play with them. In addition to their concerts and workshops, the musicians also regularly take part in open jam sessions – so don’t miss out on a chance to learn from some of Europe’s best performers!

Vaka is a small and friendly festival with a varied programme that offers something for everyone.

  • Afternoon talk-shows, Music & Chat, where you can meet the festival artists and learn about their tradition and instruments
  • Evening concerts and dance displays, where you can listen to the ancient Icelandic rímur ballads and the old traditional instruments, langspil and fiðla, alongside performances carrying the old traditions into the future.
  • Afternoon choir and folk dance workshops.
  • Informal song and tune sessions and social dancing, where everyone is welcome to join in.

Location

Matti Kallio Trio

Vaka is held in the vibrant town of Akureyri, the small capital of northern Iceland.  With its spectacular scenery and historic sites, which are home to many rich folklore traditions, Akureyri is the ideal location for our festival and a great base for exploring the north of Iceland.

Venues

Main concerts take place in the state of the art Hof Cultural Centre, which is located down town, right beside the harbour. Hof is also home to TónAK, the Akureyri music school with which Vaka runs a comprehensive workshop programme during the festival. Other festival events and sessions take place in intimate local settings, Bláa kannan café and Götubarinn, that are within easy walking distance of the many and varied cafes, restaurants and bars in the town centre.

Towns & Villages

Society and the economy have many faces. Whereas agriculture is the mainstay of rural areas, the towns depend upon fishing, industry, trade and a range of services, with each village having its own characteristics though they all prove hospitable hosts.
The availability of food and accommodation and the possibilities at every location for recreation and entertainment make hopping between the villages informative as well as fun.
In every case, the residents are lively and ready to celebrate.
