Varmahlíð Camping Ground

A peaceful and cozy camp site with toilet facilities, hot and cold running water and electricity. There is also a washing machine, tumbel dryer and a shower. A short distance to many activities. There are two football fields next to the camp site and only about 250 meters walk to the swimming pool. The swimming pool is 25 x 12,5 meters with a hot tub and a childrens pool. The childrens pool is a bit warmer with a small waterslider for the smallest guests. There is also a large trampoline for children.

A tourist information center is in the village where they provide all information on activities, walking paths, services, museums, churches and much more.

The camp sites in the town Sauðárkrókur, Hofsós, Varmahlíð and at Hólar are operated together. It is possible to stay the first night in one of these camp sites and pay less during the next night in some of the other camp sites. It is necessary to provide a receipt from the first camp site.

Víðimýrarkirkja church

Víðimýrarkirkja church is one of the few preserved turf churches in Iceland. At the beginning of the 20th century its fate was uncertain, but luckily the immense cultural value of the building was recognised in time, and the National Museum of Iceland became responsible for its renovation. The church was built in 1834 and has turf walls, but timber gables both back and front.

Glaumbaer

The Glaumbær Farm first exhibition was opened in 1952, but the farm had served as a dwelling until 1947. The old turf farmhouse forms the backdrop for exhibitions focusing on rural life in 18th- and 19th-century Iceland. On the museum grounds at Glaumbær, there are also two 19th-century timber houses, Áshús and Gilsstofa. These are good examples of the first timber houses built in the region. Áshús contains exhibitions and the Tea Room Áskaffi, which serves traditional light Icelandic fare. Full meals are available if booked in advance. Gilstofa, at present, contains the Museum´s administrative offices. Together these three buildings are a powerful reminder of 18th- and 19th-century life in rural Iceland.

Towns & Villages

Society and the economy have many faces. Whereas agriculture is the mainstay of rural areas, the towns depend upon fishing, industry, trade and a range of services, with each village having its own characteristics though they all prove hospitable hosts.
The availability of food and accommodation and the possibilities at every location for recreation and entertainment make hopping between the villages informative as well as fun.
In every case, the residents are lively and ready to celebrate.
