Áskaffi

The house Áshúsið was built in 1883-1886 at Ás farm in the Hegranes area, then moved to Glaumbær in 1991. Opening in Áshúsið in 1995, the café has become a natural part of any visit to Glaumbær and its exhibit of ´´Life on a Turf Farm´´.

Should you be in the mood for something extra special drop in and try our traditional Icelandic delicacies such as our cream or sugared pancakes, traditional Icelandic donuts (kleinur) and a variety of other cakes, biscuits and home baked bread. The aroma of coffee and hot chocolate reminds us of those cosy days at Grandma´s. During lunch it is possible to order Icelandic skyr with cream and homemade bread. Soup can be ordered in advance of groups of ten or more.

The Áskaffi opening hours are from 9 am to 6 pm daily from 1 June to 1 September and on weekends during winter.

Áskaffi is 7 km from the crossroads at Varmahlíð of Highways 1 and 75.
Glaumbær lies next to No. 75, which leads north to Sauðárkrókur. Access is easy by bus, since one runs between Sauðárkrókur and Varmahlíð every day, allowing for transfers to the daily coach between Reykjavík and Akureyri.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Víðimýrarkirkja church

Víðimýrarkirkja church is one of the few preserved turf churches in Iceland. At the beginning of the 20th century its fate was uncertain, but luckily the immense cultural value of the building was recognised in time, and the National Museum of Iceland became responsible for its renovation. The church was built in 1834 and has turf walls, but timber gables both back and front.
