The Icelandic Chess Federation was founded in the doctor’s residence in Blönduós on June 23, 1925.
Six chess clubs from North Iceland founded the federation. These were the chess clubs of Blönduós, Sauðárkrókur, Hörgárdalur, Akureyri, Hvammstangi, and Siglufjörður.
Three of these clubs are still active today: the chess clubs of Akureyri, Sauðárkrókur, and Siglufjörður.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Icelandic Chess Federation, a special event is being held.
The Icelandic Open will take place in Blönduós from June 15–21. The tournament will be held in a charming venue called Krúttið, which previously housed a bakery by the same name.
The Annual General Meeting of the Icelandic Chess Federation will be held on Saturday, June 14, in the community center in Blönduós. Before the tournament, the outgoing board of the federation will hold its final board meeting in the old doctor’s house, and after the AGM, the new board will hold its first meeting there as well!
Following the final round of the tournament, on Saturday, June 21, a centennial celebration of the federation will take place with a festive dinner.
On Sunday, June 22, the Blönduós Blitz will be held — a strong blitz tournament, likely featuring well-known international chess players.
Various fun side events will take place alongside the tournament — more information on that to come!
Accommodation will be available at Hotel Blönduós or in summer cottages in Glaðheimar at reasonable rates for those interested in attending the AGM or the Blönduós Blitz.
