The road was created at the beginning of the 20th century to connect the farms Aðalból in Austurárdalur valley and Efri Núpur in Núpsdalur valley and enable the farmers to play the game of Lomber at each other's farms. Lomber is a playing card game of south European origin (L‘Hombre), and the tradition to play Lomber is very much alive in western Húnaþing.
The grave of poet and midwife Skáld Rósa can be found in the graveyard at Efri Núpur, but she died on the farm in 1855.
Two routes can be taken.
Road no. 706 to Efri Núpur, Lombervegur lies just south of the farm and then turns east. Or road F 578 to Arnarvatn lake and then Lombervegur road lies to the west before coming to the bridge over Austurá by the abandoned farm Bjargarstaðir. The route is easy. In one place a gate must be climbed over. Great views of glaciers to the south and Húnaflói bay to the north. It is ideal to bring playing cards on this route and sit down sheltered by large cliffs and play a few rounds.
