Miklagil canyon used to be one of the most dreaded barriers for those crossing Holtavörðuheiði in previous times. The canyon lies from southwest to northeast, south of the abandoned farm Grænumýrartunga and road no. 1 crossed the canyon via bridge.
Junction from road no.1 down to Hrútafjarðará river, north of Grænumýrartunga. Drive along a trail until you came to a gate. There you will find a walking trail that leads to a fence, which must be climbed over. Short walking path from there which you follow to the south and cross the creek in Litlagil to get to Miklagil. This area is very scenic. Walk along the river on the northern side, but soon the route goes up the canyon’s edge, which you keep following from there. The canyon is very narrow in places and majestic and the river runs through it with waterfalls, rapids and deep pools. Far up in the canyon is a beautiful waterfall with a cliff on the edge of the waterfall. Both the waterfall and the cliff are called Jörundur and legend has it a troll turned to stone there. Road no. 1 is not far off. Walk the same way back, unless you have a second vehicle and have parked the other one close to the bridge over Miklagil by road no. 1.
