The canyon is spectacular and has a few exceptionally beautiful waterfalls. Some of the waterfalls can only be seen from one side of the canyon, so the best course of action is to walk up on one side and return on the other. It is advisable to bring light wading shoes to wade over the river.
The walk begins close to the farm Fagrabrekka, by road no. 1 south of Staðarskáli. Vehicles should be parked on an observation lot on the east side of road no. 1, without them causing any interruption. From there you walk a little while along with road no. 1 northwards until you reach Selá river and you follow it westwards on the northern side. Soon you have to climb over a fence. Walk along the edge of the canyon and soon you will see quite a few waterfalls, each more beautiful than the other. A little lower it’s as if a cliff has split from the edge of the canyon and there you can go into a little hollow and observe the amazing formations. Then you go up again and must climb another fence. Keep walking along the canyon until gets wider and less steep. There you walk down onto a grassy area and cross the river where it branches. Carry on downwards.
Then you walk on along the canyon’s edge until you reach a tributary or creek that plunges into the canyon. There you must climb over a fence. The canyon is exceptionally beautiful from this spot. Carry on along the canyon’s edge, but before the end of the walk one more fence must cross.
