Borgarsandur beach

Borgarsandur sand is a fun outdoor activity area next to Sauðárkrókur. The starting point is by the junction of road no. 744 and 75 (Þverárfjallsvegur-Sauðárkróksbraut). It is possible to park vehicles by the rock wall on the western end of Borgarsandur, north of the industrial area. You walk along the black beach and it is possible to walk all the way to the estuary of Héraðsvötn, all depending on the time you have and how far you want to go. On the way, you pass the wreck of a ship, which has become a landmark on the sand. The wreck is of the ship Ernan, which was pulled out of Sauðárkrókur harbor around 1970. The intention was to burn the ship on Borgarsandur, but the operation was not a success and it ended as a ghostship on the beach. Excellent place for photography. The beach has good access year-round and it is wonderful to bring children there to look at birds, play in the sand, pick shells ort to invite your loved one for a romantic walk in the sunset.
