Gatanöf og Bakkahöfði Mixed trail (both hiking and cycling)
Gatanöf is a striking sea-eroded rock formation rising around 12 metres above the shoreline, with a large natural arch carved through its centre by the North Atlantic. Located on the Bakkahöfði headland just north of Húsavík, it is a favourite spot for photographers thanks to its dramatic coastal scenery.
Bakkafjara beach and Bakkahöfði are listed as protected natural sites, known for their distinctive coastal cliffs, rock formations, rich intertidal habitats and abundant birdlife.

The hike begins at the gravel car park below the PCC Bakki Silicon plant, approximately 2 km north of Húsavík. An information board at the trailhead provides useful background about the area before you set off.
The route is best walked clockwise, starting with a short stretch of gravel before climbing gently onto the grassy headland. After around 350 metres, you'll reach Gatanöf, the first of several scenic viewpoints along the trail.
Continuing along the coastline, the path passes a number of marked stops, including Illunöf, Bakkastakki and Veturliðabæli, each offering a different perspective of the dramatic shoreline. As the trail descends from the headland, the terrain becomes slightly rougher but remains relatively easy to walk.
The final section crosses a sandy area before joining an old gravel road, which leads back to the car park. Overall, the route is easy to follow and suitable for most hikers.
