Since 2022, Visit North Iceland has been engaged in various projects aimed at promoting greater sustainability awareness in tourism. Following an analysis conducted with the assistance of the Kontiki consulting firm (see the report here), it was determined that the focus of the ongoing discussion would primarily be on social and economic aspects. Two main areas of emphasis were identified:

Sustainable tourism in North Iceland should:

1) Benefit local communities. The goal is to ensure that local residents have a voice in the development of tourism and maintain a positive attitude toward it.

2) Increase local value creation (all year-round). The goal is to promote collaboration within the industry in North Iceland, leading to longer stays and enhanced value creation.

Many tourism companies in North Iceland have embraced the principles of sustainable development. These companies share a common commitment to implementing priorities and projects aimed at enhancing sustainability and improving the well-being of the local community. Visit North Iceland has gathered reports on the efforts of several of these companies. The goal is to raise awareness among leaders of other tourism companies about sustainability and encourage them to take positive action. You can read the stories of a few of these companies below.
