A good starting point is the parking area at Kortárborgir (by the folf course) up on the cliffs. Another option is the parking areas near the University of Akureyri.
To reach the parking area at Kortárborgir, drive up Þingvallastræti past the Pálmholt Kindergarten. Just above it (right before reaching the bridge over the Glerá River), there is a gravel road on the right. Follow the gravel road up onto the cliffs, where cars can be parked.
From the cliffs, continue north along a nature trail that runs to the left of the University of Akureyri, along the canyon, until reaching Borgarbraut streat. From there, take the walking path along the road to the left, cross the bridge over the Glerá River, and then turn onto the first trail on the left into the forest. A bit into the forest there are two trails to choose from. One is paved and straight and leads to the bridge over the Glerá River where the gravel road begins. The other, more enjoyable trail is a natural path that runs along the river, offering views of the canyon and the river. Along this route, you can see the infrastructure for the zipline operated by Zipline Akureyri, which allows people to participate in a guided ride over the river. Both trails end at the same point, at the pedestrian and bike bridge over the Glerá River. After crossing the bridge, turn left and follow the gravel road back up to the parking area on the cliffs.
