Siglufjörður - Hvanneyrarskál Hiking trail
A scenic walk along the avalanche protection barriers to Hvanneyrarskál, a natural hollow perched about 200 metres above sea level. The site is closely linked to many stories from the herring boom years and was a popular meeting place for local sweethearts, adding a touch of history and romance to the route.

The walk begins in central Siglufjörður, where parking is available in several locations. Head north through the town, then climb towards the hospital and continue to the old power station. From there, follow the avalanche protection barrier southwards to a viewpoint with excellent views over the town and fjord.
To reach Hvanneyrarskál, retrace your steps briefly and follow the marked trail uphill through a gate signed for Grillhyttan. The path is wide and easy to follow. From Hvanneyrarskál, an optional trail leads to a small waterfall and down to Grillhyttan, a picnic hut with barbecue facilities and a guestbook.
Return to the avalanche barrier the same way and continue south to its end. Descend to the main road and follow it back through town to complete the loop.
This rewarding walk combines panoramic views, local history, and one of Siglufjörður’s most storied meeting places from the herring era.
