The walk starts at the parking lot at Garðarsbraut, and from there you head to the Botanic garden, which lies along the Búðará River. It is a good idea to take your time to enjoy a stroll through the park. Leaving the park, you walk south toward Yltjörn, one of the four ponds south of Húsavík called Kaldbakstjarnir. The largest of these is Svarðarmýrartjörn, which faces the sea from the road, while Yltjörn, the second-largest pond, lies on the east side.
You can head south from the park along Iðavellír, turn right down Fossvellir to Garðarsbraut, and then walk south past Olís over Þverholtíð and turn right onto a path that first runs down along Þverholtíð but then turns south. There is a sign pointing to Yltjörn, and the way there is well marked.
When you reach the parking lot by the pond, a path runs along the bottom of the lake, and at the northern end, you can walk back to Húsavík. When you reach Norðlenska, cross the road and walk along the path on the seafront into the town and back to the starting point. There are many benches along this path, so it is easy to rest your weary bones and enjoy the view over the bay. There are also tables and benches at Yltjörn, so it is ideal to bring a packed lunch and enjoy the nature by the warm Yltjörn, fish for goldfish, wade in, or take a swim. The walk is almost 10 km long, but the route is well-marked, and the paths are good.
