Mývatn Öl is a family-owned handcraft brewery with roots in Sel, a family-owned company with over 50 years of history at Skútustaðir Farm by Lake Mývatn. Founded in 1973 as a small shop, Sel soon added a restaurant and over time evolved into Sel-Hótel Mývatn, where they have been welcoming travelers from around the world since 2000.
In early 2022, Mývatn Öl began an exciting new chapter by brewing our own beer. From the start they wanted each brew to capture the spirit of the Lake Mývatn region, inspired by its natural wonders and local heritage. Therefore every beer is named after a person or place from the area, connecting the landscapes of Lake Mývatn and local heroes to each beer.
Our original brewery is located at Kaffi Sel, our café and souvenir shop just across the street from the hotel lobby. Visitors can still see the original equipment, where they continue to experiment, test, and evolve new recipes.
As demand grew for Mývatn Öl, they expanded production to a larger top of the line facility just a few meters away, allowing us to maintain quality while increasing capacity. Despite the move, the original setup at Kaffi Sel remains central to our philosophy, a place where ideas are brewed, and new flavors are born.
At Mývatn Öl, every beer is handcrafted with passion, from crisp lagers to bold IPAs and seasonal specialties. They hope every sip connects you to the landscapes, people and spirit of North Iceland.
