Siglufjörður Comics Festival - Probably the world’s northernmost comics festival!

Siglufjörður, renowned for its historic fishing legacy, is poised to make history once again as it proudly hosts the FIRST Siglufjörður Comics Festival. The event, anticipated to be the world’s northernmost comics festival, will take place from Friday, August 30 to Sunday, September 1 2024, offering a unique convergence of local and international talent, community participation and cross-cultural exchange.

About the Festival
The Siglufjörður Comics Festival is a milestone event dedicated to the celebration of the visual storytelling medium. This inaugural edition promises to be an immersive experience, offering attendees the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of activities in a picturesque setting. Funding for the festival comes in part from the Municipality of Fjallabyggð, helping to make this a truly community-driven and community-supported event.

Festival highlights include:

    • an Artists’ Alley, featuring both local and international guests
    • a captivating exhibition with original illustrations by the beloved artist Brian Pilkington
    • a commemorative exhibition about Siglufjarðarprentsmiðja, which printed the first comic books in Icelandic, curated by Örlygur Kristfinnsson
    • enlightening lectures for adults and animated movie screenings for children by TAF
    • a convivial Drink & Draw evening accompanied by live jazz music by Akureyri’s Baby Bop
  • a tabletop games workshop, hosted by Goblin. Featuring miniature wargames, role-playing games, and trading card games, suitable for adventurers of all ages.
  • Live drag show with electronic music by artist Holy Hrafn

Venues and Exploration

Spanning multiple locations in downtown Siglufjörður, including the esteemed, award-winning Herring Era Museum, the rustic Segull 67 brewery, and the charming Söluturninn Gallery, attendees will be able to explore the vibrant world of comics while simultaneously immersing themselves in the town’s rich history and culture.

Cultural Significance

Siglufjörður holds a special place in Icelandic culture and history, primarily recognized for being the centre of the Herring Adventure, but also for being the birthplace of printing comics in Icelandic. In the 1930s, the pioneering publishing house Siglufjarðar Prentsmiðja achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first publishing house in Iceland to publish comics in Icelandic, sparking a passion for visual storytelling that reverberates throughout Iceland to this day.
