‘The Fifth Suite’ – Bach at Kaupangur Church
The magnificent Cello Suite No. 5 in C minor, BWV 1011, will be performed at Kaupangur Church (approx. 3 km from Akureyri) this coming Thursday from 8:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
Ólöf Sigursveinsdóttir is performing Bach’s music in selected churches across Eyjafjörður; she began her ‘touring concert series’ by teaching preschool children about the Bach couple. From there, she visited Svalbarð Church last Friday, and now it is the turn of Kaupangur Church, located closer to Akureyri (a stone's throw from the Skógarböðin Forest Lagoon). Ólöf pays tribute to Anna Magdalena Bach by focusing on her manuscript during these performances; these are authentic copies of her husband’s compositions from the period 1727–1731 (BWV 1007–1012), the original manuscripts of which do not survive. Ólöf shares facts with the audience regarding the couple and the musical manuscript itself.
Kaupangur Church This time, Kaupangur Church provides the inspiration for Ólöf to perform the fifth suite—a magnificent six-movement work that takes about half an hour to perform. Kaupangur is an ancient church site, first mentioned in the *Auðunarmáldagi* (Auðun’s Church Inventory) of 1318; in the Catholic era, the church was dedicated to Mary, Mother of God, and Saint Olaf, King of Norway. This stone church seats approximately 90 people and was consecrated in 1922. Its appearance is distinctive in many ways, notably due to the prominent tower on the left side of the building.
