Price description
The start for the 10 km and 20+ km races is by the community centre in Hvammstangi. The route follows a walking path alongside the Syðri-Hvammsá river and up into Kirkjuhvamm. From there, runners pass the old grain mill and continue onto a trail through a beautiful wooded area, then across moorland on a sheep track, following the river up past Fossa. The route then crosses the river to the south and climbs up to Efstaberg, offering beautiful views over Hvammstangi, into both Miðfjörður and Hrútafjörður, and out over Húnaflói once the highest point is reached. From there, the route heads east, to the left, across the river and up towards Skógarmannsgil, before turning north, to the left, along Sneiðingur on an old sheep track past Snælduklettur.
On the 10 km route, the aid station is located at Snælduklettur.
Total elevation gain: 513 m.
The route continues north across Draugagilslækur and into the stunningly beautiful Hvammur, with its charming streams and small waterfalls.
In the 10 km race, runners then turn left from Hvammur towards the sea. The route crosses a small marshy area alongside the Ytri-Hvammsá river, continues along a sheep track down over the hills and moorland, through the forested area above the campsite in Kirkjuhvamm, and down alongside the road. From there, runners continue onto a walking path and finish with a fast downhill stretch to the finish line by the community centre.
The 20+ km route, with a total elevation gain of 826 m, continues north out of Hvammur and follows an old track out and down onto the mountain road leading up to Káraborg. From there, runners climb the road up to Káraborg, a beautiful basalt-column rock formation with fantastic views over the fjords and mountains. The route continues up to Fjalagilslækur, where the aid station is located. There are beautiful mountain views here, with the Strandafjöll mountains visible on the northern horizon. From the aid station, the route descends before crossing onto a track heading south, to the left, and back into Hvammur. From there, runners turn down to the right and follow the same final section as the 10 km race alongside the Ytri-Hvammsá river, through the forested area above the campsite and down into Kirkjuhvamm, finishing at the community centre.
One ITRA point is awarded for this distance.
Both race routes are mostly on trails, tracks, and sheep paths, with short sections through marshland and moorland. There is an aid station at 5 km on the 10 km route and at 12.5 km on the 20+ km route.
20+ km start: 14:00
10 km start: 15:00
There will be generous raffle prizes, as well as prizes for the top three finishers in the men’s and women’s categories in both distances. Light refreshments will be available for all participants in the 10 km and 20 km races after the finish.
A family run of just under 1.5 km will also be offered, starting and finishing by the community centre in Hvammstangi.
