Raufarhöfn

Located on the eastern coast of the Melrakkaslétta Peninsula, Raufarhöfn is the northernmost village on mainland Iceland. Here, summer nights are exceptionally bright and winter days remarkably dark. The Arctic Circle lies just offshore, and on a hill above the village stands the Arctic Henge, one of Iceland's largest outdoor artworks, combining Icelandic culture and literary heritage with ancient knowledge and the unique natural surroundings.

Fishing has always been the foundation of life in Raufarhöfn. During the herring era, the village was one of Iceland's busiest herring ports, bustling with activity. Today, life moves at a quieter pace, making Raufarhöfn a peaceful place to spend some time, go hiking, fishing or sailing, and enjoy the midnight sun.

The village is surrounded by beautiful landscapes. The harbour lies sheltered beneath Raufarhafnarhöfði, while the village church, designed by renowned Icelandic architect Guðjón Samúelsson and built in 1927, overlooks the area. Melrakkaslétta is known for its rich natural resources, fishing, eider duck nesting grounds and abundant lakes. In spring and on bright summer evenings, the peninsula comes alive with diverse birdlife and striking natural beauty. Rauðinúpur offers impressive views and a chance to experience the abundant birdlife around the sea stacks Karl and Kerling.

At the northern edge of the peninsula lies Hraunhafnartangi, the northernmost point of mainland Iceland. Here you will find Þorgeirsdys, believed to be the burial mound of the legendary Þorgeir Hávarsson, whose heroic final battle is told in the medieval Icelandic Fóstbræðra saga.

Raufarhöfn and its surroundings offer plenty of opportunities for walking and outdoor activities. A walk around Raufarhafnarhöfði is one of the village's hidden gems, offering beautiful views over the village, harbour and sea. Several other scenic walking routes can be found in and around Raufarhöfn, making it easy to enjoy the area's peaceful atmosphere and closeness to nature.

Raufarhöfn offers essential local services, including healthcare services, a pharmacy, grocery store, bank, swimming pool, gym, campsite, car repair shop, self-service fuel station, hotel, guesthouse and café.

Every autumn, Raufarhöfn Culture Days take place in the village. The celebrations begin on the first weekend of October and continue for around ten days, with a varied programme of events taking place throughout the community. The Culture Days are a great opportunity for locals and visitors to come together and experience the culture and community life of Raufarhöfn.
